Answering the call for prayer

One of the things many of us learn when praying for healing is that problems can’t simply be "wished away."  They have to be healed.  And this often requires committed spiritual work, which at times — if you're like me — might seem like a lot to do just by oneself.  So where can one turn for help and support when it comes to healing through prayer?

Ever try a Christian Science practitioner?

This is someone who devotes his or her full time on a professional basis to the ministry of Christian healing, — or spiritual healing through prayer.  I've found this ministry (or "practice," as it's called) is deeply humanitarian in nature and brings with it a true sense of humility, compassion, and public service.  And it’s a purely non-medical approach to health care and reform — in other words, no psychiatry, counseling, or medication is involved.

The way I look at it, Christian Science prayer-based treatment is a mental and spiritual method of healing that effects a complete change in consciousness: removing negativity in thinking and living (whatever's harmful to health and happiness), while developing an understanding of God and one’s spiritual relationship to Him — an understanding that’s naturally conducive to better health and well-being.

This ministry isn’t part of a church structure.  Practitioners don’t receive compensation from the church the way clergy are supported in other denominations.  Instead, it’s carried out on a strictly professional and individual basis.  Practitioners are compensated by the individuals they help, similar to general health care providers.  And anyone from the public — not just Christian Scientists — may contact a practitioner if they’re looking for spiritual support or want to learn more about prayer.

As an example, here’s a clip from “Chords of Memory,” which features a Christian Science practitioner who works with Alzheimer’s patients.  It was filmed by OETA (Oklahoma Educational Television Authority – PBS) and provides a glimpse into this distinct approach to healing.

How do I find a Christian Science practitioner, what do they charge, and what should I expect when I call?  (more videos here)
